Open Source Used for Tsunami Management System
A web services architect in Sri Lanka has worked with several programmers in the country's IT industry to build a collection of open source web applications for managing the fallout from the tsunami which devastated the country in December.
Dr Sanjiva Weerawarana, a Research Staff Member in the Component Systems Group of IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center, said the components for the project, called Sahana (meaning peace or calm in Sinhalese), had been built by various Sri Lankan developers.
"All I did was sell their work and manage the politics of getting the government to accept it," he said.
Dr Weerawana resides in Sri Lanka and telecommutes to his work in New York. He is a visiting lecturer in the Computer Science Department of the University of Moratuwa where he teaches classes and helps drive student R&D projects.
