by fouadbajwa last modified 2006-11-05 05:26 AM

Ubuntu Linux (www.ubuntu.com) has now incorporated support for Urdu within it's future releases thus becomming the first Linux distribution to support localized Urdu translations internationally. We congradulate Ubuntu l10n-Urdu Translation Team (Ubuntu Official Pakistan Team) for their continued community and volunteer based contributions.

The Ubuntu l10n-Urdu Translation Team (Ubuntu Official Pakistan Team) volunteers thank Ubuntu Linux Team (Ubuntu Linux is sponsored by Canonical Ltd. www.canonical.com) for incorporating the team's voluntary Urdu translation contributions into the future releases of it's widely and globally used Linux distribution.

The latest release of Ubuntu Linux Edgy v 6.10 supports Urdu Language (also can be downloaded and enabled in Ubuntu v6.06 LTS), thus, Pakistan and the global Urdu speaking community now has free and open access to localized Urdu support on Ubuntu's Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) computing platform.

The Ubuntu l10n-Urdu Translation Team lead by Noumaan Yaqoob are continuing their efforts to add further translations to the Ubuntu Launchpad Rosetta Translation system at www.launchpad.net/rosetta. We further invite the global Urdu computing community to contribute to the system and help Urdu communities worldwide to benefit from Urdu computing. The Localized Documentation Team lead by Waqas Toor is also in the final phase of completing localized documentation of Ubuntu Linux Desktop and Server guides. Localized traning CBTs for Ubuntu Linux including podcasts and videocast are to follow in the near future.

Saadat Saeed (Ubuntu Pakistan Team Member) has also made an excellent contribution by introducing the first Ubuntu Linux Urdu Editor "PyUrduEdit" that will further accelerate further community translation efforts. The Urdu Editor project is accessible at https://sourceforge.net/projects/pyurduedit.

The Urdu Word Bank & Dictionary including the localization support for Urdu in Ubuntu has been made possible due to extensive voluntary contributions and sharing promoting the evolution of an open and inclusive digital commons ecosystem in Pakistan. Open Office Urdu Language support is already widely available through efforts by the IN language volunteer teams. With this, Urdu Localization has become a combined global effort for the benefit of humanity through ICTs.
