Software Freedom Day 2007 in Nepal
Software Freedom Day (SFD) is an international event when people vow for the freedom of the softwares. This year it was celebrated on 15th September by 60 nations along with Nepal. This year's SFD was very important event in the Software's freedom movement in Nepal. For the first time, HLCIT (High Level Commission for Information Technology), government's highest authority for ICT, was SFD's organizing partner along with FOSS-Nepal Community.
The program was widely covered in print and electronic media.
Despite the fact that some participants of the Indian Idol gala were in
nearby Pulchowk Campus for a concert, the event saw a huge
participation of common people. People made it a point to come to SFD
first and then go for the concert.
The eve was celebrated with candle lighting at Mandala, Maitighar. This
year's theme for SFD in Nepal was chosen to be 'Linux for
Destops'.
On 15th, high ranking people from HLCIT and notable ones in ICT like
Mr. Mahabir Pun (who needs no introduction) were present to show their
solidarity for the Free and Open Source.
On that day, there was Distro Demo focusing applications for Desktop in
Linux where we showcased applications ranging from Text editor to photo
editor, games to 3D modeling. People anyway liked the localized Linux
ie Nepalinux which was impressive with Nepali unicode and Nepali Spell
checker. Then there was much awaited Freedom Toaster, where you can
burn the softwares of your choice. It was a massive hit. People were
excited to see how easily they could have a free and open source
software of their choice. We had a documentary show where the
documentary on FOSS activities in Nepal was shown along with Revolution
OS and Anti-Trust. Later, in the evening, it was time for celebration
where there were programs like Musical Chair, Quiz to select Mr and
Miss SFD. After this, we were there rocking the dance floor.
By the way, I was in Distro Demo where I displayed a 3D modeling
software- Blender and an education suite-GCompris. I am uploading some
pics because I believe a picture is worth 1000 words.
