During last three years many technical projects has been performed in the context of Iran Free/Open Source Project to provide Persian language support in most widely used application and GNU/Linux localization stack. One the current important obstacles for promotion of FOSS in Iran is the lack of a written and approved nation wide policy and strategy for FOSS.

The Iran Free/Open Source Software policy making project tries to provide a strategic program for promotion and deploying FOSS in Iran through an approved policy. The project has been funded by Iran Telecommunication research Center and supported by High council of Information Technology. The project has been started in Dec. 2006 and will be ended in Sept. 2007. The project is conducted by an active company in the area of Open Source software along with a group of strategic planning experts. The project phases include analysis the FOSS status in Iran ICT programs and plans (motivations and requirement analysis), establishing goals and targets, policy formulations and stakeholder consultation phases. The project should also provide some guideline for all stakeholders.
