National Farsi Linux Project

by Mohammad Khansari last modified 2004-10-28 04:45 AM

In February 2003, Sharif Advanced Information and Communication Technology Centre in co-operation with the High Council of Informatics began the design of the national Farsi Linux. Its aim was to create a national operating system in line with Information Technology, security and national independence, profitability and freedom.

Considering Iran’s program in becoming a member of the Worldwide Trade Organisation (WTO) and implementing copy-right, government policy for allowing software’s’ of high-quality to be made public and supporting Open Source software enables the Farsi Linux project to begin, with the following operations in mind:

• Identifying the potential and capabilities of the country in this field.
• Forming a Technical Committee composed of Linux experts.
• Forming an Administration Committee composed of distinguished experts from university scholars, governmental sector and from private companies.

With the recommendation that the Technical Committee and approval of the Administration Committee, a comprehensive language was required to fill in the gaps within the Farsi version of the operating system. Also, alongside with the capabilities that Farsi in Linux and software’s dependent on them bring, a generalised cultural usage of Linux is made possible.

Linux and Open Source Software’s within Iran
Just as today’s governments throughout the world are preserving their capital, providing more security and making common usage of Linux user-friendly, Iran has also made significant progress in the usage of Linux.

Large-scale usage of Linux similar to its predecessors such as UNIX and SCO UNIX in large governmental organisations and private sectors is well established. On the other hand, due to bankruptcy of SCO UNIX and lack of their support in Iran and lack of databases on this product, such as Oracle, and the lower cost of UNIX, is making most of these organisations turn towards Linux as a national operating system. Developing Farsi Linux operating systems for Client-Side applications and as a desktop operating system like Windows requires time. However, it should be noted that its usage of the Server-Side has no significant difficulties.

The special advantage of Linux on the Server-Side over other operating systems is that it includes all required services for network, internet, security, stability and high efficiency, along with existence of international sources for removing faults and providing guidance.

The financial and intellectual property of the national operating system should not belong to any country. This is required to preserve independence and national security according to the requirement of each organisation. Due to the acceptance of Linux as the national operating system, mean while most of the working environment and networks in governmental organisations use Linux as part of their server. Therefore, for the expansion of the Information Technology industry, in line with national security, it is necessary to pay special attention to national Linux operating system as the basis of this industry. To achieve these goals, the management of the national Farsi Linux operating system has decided to carry out technical projects that is based on established cultural background, expansion of Open Source software and the Linux operating system.
