Iran FOSS Project in WSIS 2005

by Zahra Ahmadi last modified 2006-05-01 07:59 PM

One of the most important obstacles that all the third world countries, as well as Iran are facing in relation to the information society, is the digital divide. If enough attention is not paid over time the `digital divide not only will exist at an international level, but can also occur within national level. Access to information and communication technology among the people within cities and villages, the rich and the poor, educated and non-educated and finally among men and women is unequal. This multi-dimensional inequality is one of the main obstacles in achieving a sustainable information society.

Today the ‘Open Source Software’ is known to be one of the most important ICT technologies for the development of countries. The ever growing trend of this paradigm will help narrow the so called digital divide between developed and developing countries.
Dr. Mohammad Khansari, the project director of the Open Source Software, in the world summit on the Information society that was held in Tunisia (WSIS 2005), introduced the project and described the activities that have already been accomplished in Iran.
Dr. Khansari in a part of his speech described the basis of the Free/Open source Software. He went on to elaborate on the main goals of the national FOSS project and also described how these sorts of software can be used within the government sector. At the end of his speech, some of the completed projects like the Iranian GNU/Linux distributions, such as Parsix, Learnix, Shabdix, Karamad etc were mentioned and the books that are currently under publications, as well as others promotional activities were presented.
