Conference on Free/Open Source Software for teachers of Tehran vocational schools

The conference was organized by the deputy of vocational training of Tehran city, on the 7th February 2006.


  In this conference Dr Mohammad Khansari, the director of the National Free/Open Source Software project said: “Saving within expenses, enabling a sustainable education, promotion of innovation as well as observing moral aspect of the society by preventing software's being illegally copied are the main reasons for the use of these software within the education system.
  Mohammad Khansari gave examples of educational usage of Free/open source software in various countries and said that "Brazil has set up computer sites in about 100,000 schools that use free software; the government of the poor region of Extremadora in Spain, voluntarily changed all their Windows operating system to Linux. Also in Namibia, there are about 340 schools that use Linux for IT education." The conference continued with 2 students from Tehran vocational school presenting the Persian Linux system and demonstrating their experience with this operating system. This demonstration due to its practical approach and usage by technical students was very well received by the audience.

  At the end of the conference, Mr. Haji GholamAli talked about the different applications of Linux, as well as its application compared to that of other operating systems. In his speech titled “Linux everywhere for everybody” he gave some practical examples of using Linux in hospital surgery rooms, air traffic control, new mobile phones, as well as within refrigerators. He concluded that at the time being it is inevitable to use Linux in Iran and we have to train the next generation of engineers and technical staffs to be Linux and Open Source aware. An important outcome of this conference was the desire of some of the teachers and authorities of the vocation schools of Tehran to FOSS. They expressed their willingness to use Linux along with Windows or to even change their current Windows operating system into Linux and Open Source applications, in training.
