Gathering of Head’s of Science and Computer Engineering Departments in the field of Free/Open Source Software- Iran

On the 5th Feb 2006, a half day conference was held, on open source software, with the presence of representatives of Computer Science and Engineering Departments throughout the country. Dr Hamid-Reza Rabiee the deputy manager of Iran Telecommunication Research Center (ITRC) opened the conference by welcoming the delegates

  The conference was organized by the ITRC and the Sharif University, Advanced Information and Communication Technology Centre (AICTC); as well as with the cooperation of the supreme council of ICT and High Council of Information.
  The head of the High council of Informatics in his speech praised the national Free/Open Source software project as an important movement and said: “Unfortunately, we are very short in manpower in FOSS field and I hope we can overcome this shortfall with the help of you academics”.
  Dr Mohammad Khansari, the director of the National Free Open Source software project, in his speech, introduced this project and emphasizing on its national aspect said: “Through the use of Free/Open source software, security and independence of the country are guaranteed. We will become self dependent and will be able to choose based on our requirements and hence be able to expand the technology in our country”.
  The director of the national FOSS project, continued within his speech by noting that saving within expenses, sustainable development, possibilities of localization, as well as preventing illegal copies of software are the main reasons for the use of such softwares in the education system. He said: “use of the Free/Open Source software will encourage students to think deeper, perform tests and cooperate with one another and force them to resolve their own problems with helps from others.”
  At the end of his speech, Dr Khansari, insisted that the goals of the national FOSS project are to create the ground for a Persian enabled open source operating system based on the GNU/Linux. He stated:
    “In the FOSS project, fundamental problems associated with the Farsi language within different parts of the GNU/Linux operating system, as well as other useful FOSS applications, will be resolved.”
