- The First International Conference on Persian Script & Language Localization (Iran,Tehran, from 2005-05-13 09:00 AM to 2005-05-14 04:00 PM) — by Zahra Ahmadi
- Today's fast developing technology, calls for a national ICT plan for any developing country, and especially an “ICT industry promotion plan” that is expected to boost the country/region's growth to a dramatic extent. This can be the most important element in “bridging the digital divide”. Bridging the digital divide has to be a “MUST” for any country or region. The existence of such divide can increase the gap between the developed and developing countries. Digital divide has so many elements among which usability and availability can be realized as the most prominent and role-playing elements. Usability focuses on local language/customs while availability is mostly relevant to compatibility. The aim of the conference is to provide plans for localization in Iran as well as discussion on related activities in the world and also choice of platform for local language computing activities. Recently, there has been the formation of seminars such as “Gathering of Experts in Persian Language and Scripts in Computer Environment” and “First Workshop on Language and Computer” which intended to cover major uses of language in computer environments. These conferences focused mainly on the use status of Persian language within the organizations and the problems they face. The Localization project conducted by Iran's Telecommunication Research Center (ITRC) has carried out research on other countries' experience on the subject to make a guideline document for localization of the Persian language. Native and foreign experts are taking part in the event, covered the following topics: • Investigation on the available international standards for localization • Localization of Persian script and language in computer environments • Developing a feasible way of localization • Exchange of ideas and expertise for extension of Persian language and scripts
