Now, Linux in 13 Indian languages

KOLKATA: North Carolina-based Red Hat, which is at the crest of the global open source wave, is lining up commercial versions of the enterprise-level Linux operating system in 13 major Indian languages by February 2006.

To start with, commercial grades of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux- OS in five Indian languages - Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati, Hindi and Tamil - will be unveiled in February 2005. In the next phase, Linux-OS will be available commercially in Marathi, Telegu, Kannada, Oriya, Malayalam and Urdu among others.

Local language versions of Linux-OS will either be distributed directly by Red Hat India or through its battery of OEM (original equipment manufacturer) partners like HCL Infosystems, Acer, IBM, Wipro and PCS.

Red Hat India director and stakeholder, Mr Javed Tapia told ET: “The mass localisation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux-OS will be unleashed commercially in 13 Indian languages within a 15-month span.
