Desktop Moksha, IOSN South Asia's “Training of Trainers” on the GNU/Linux desktop saw participation from an interesting mix of people. Assembled at the CDAC Chennai premises from 29th-31st May, 2007 were people from the Central and State Governments, educational institutions as well as an NGO. They were given training in using BOSS (Bharat Operating System Solutions), a Linux distro developed and language enabled for Indian conditions by the the National Resource Centre for Free & Open Source Software (NRCFOSS). The training schedule was as follows -


29th Tuesday

Introduction to GNU/Linux - 1 hr (Theory)-Mr. M.
Sasikumar

OS Fundamentals - 1 hr (Theory) - Mr. M. Sasikumar

30th Wednesday

Knowledge Management Tools (Gaim,Mailing Lists, Email Client+Feed Reader
etc) - 2hrs (Lab) - Ms. Indraveni K.

Overview of l10n and i18n - 1hr (Theory) - Mr. R.K.V.S. Raman

Case Study on BOSS - 2 hrs (Video + Field Trip + Guest Lecture by Mr. Gopinath, NIC Chennai)


The representatives from the Information Technology departments of the Centre, Tamil Nadu and Chattisgarh states as well as lecturers from Sona and Jaya engineering colleges could help with training others in their respective domains. To be noted is the inclusion of members of the Dhan Foundation. The DHAN Foundation is a professional Non-Governmental Grassroots Organisation working in South India in the rural and remote villages for the upliftment of the poor communities through various programmes. Advancing development through ICT is one such programme wherein they have established community managed Village Information Centres in 172 panchayats coordinated by 14 hubs. Training of its members is expected to provide BOSS' first foray into the grassroots level.



The trainees were very keen to take things further and have requested further interactions.


The event was also covered by The Hindu, South India's leading newspaper on the 30th of May.
