The IOSN South Asian node is issuing a Call for Papers
within the sub-region on the following topics -
1)FOSS TCO for Govt in developing countries (in Asia)
2)FOSS Business Models for developing countries (in Asia)
3)FOSS in School Education
4)FOSS for Scientific Applications
Objectives
Each of these papers are expected to :
- Introduce Free/Open Source Software, Open Standards, and Open
Content briefly and provide a rationale for the use of Open Standards,
Open Source, Open Content in the respective sectors
- Profile FOSS based applications for the domains
- Compare FOSS-based applications with proprietary equivalents and explain benefits and disadvantages
- Provide case studies on successful deployments, scale of deployment and usage
- Provide references to research material used
Duties and Responsibilities of the Author
The Author will be required to carry out the following:
- Conduct background research on Open Standards, Open Source, Open Content particularly in the Asia-Pacific context.
- Review and analyze existing FOSS-based applications in the
respective domains as well as scale of deployment and usage
- Provide drafts of the primer taking into account the feedback provided by UNDP APDIP IOSN according to the timeline below
- Stick to the timeline mentioned
Time Frame
The project will be undertaken based on the following timetable:

Rights
All the copyright of research papers, materials, documents, publications, and online resources collected and worked upon by the Author will belong to UNDP APDIP IOSN.
UNDP APDIP IOSN will license this body of work to the general public under the Creative Commons Attribution license. Therefore, the Author has full rights to use the content and findings, for any further work of similar nature that s/he wishes to perform in the future.
Qualifications and Experience
- A Bachelors degree in IT or related fields
- Substantial knowledge of Free and Open Source Software movement particularly in the Asia-Pacific region
- Prior experience in research and publishing of papers on FOSS (must provide evidence to support)
Terms of Payments
Depending on the quality of the paper, an amount of $2500-$3500 will be
paid upon submission and acceptance by IOSN of the final prepublication
version of the papers. No further claims will be considered.

with a detailed outline of their experience in the FOSS area on or
before 20th July, 2007.
