San Francisco, Calif. - September 14, 2004 -- The Free Standards Group, a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing and promoting open source software standards, today announced the availability of the Linux Standard Base (LSB) 2.0, an essential component for the long-term market success of Linux. Important new features delivered in this release include the long-awaited inclusion of a new application binary interface (ABI) for C++ and support for 32- and 64-bit hardware architectures. The Free Standards Group also announced today that the standard has earned support from the majority of Linux distribution vendors throughout the world, marking a significant stage in the deployment of a true global standard for Linux.

Tim Bray of Sun Micro Systems in his blog writes that in mid-July, the European Commission has written a formal letter to the participants in a meeting where Sun and Microsoft proposed their XML document formats, informing them of the outcome and highlighting a couple of key points. In the letter the EC writes that it is considering taking the OpenOffice XML format to ISO as a consideration as an international standard.

The "Open Standards and Libre Software in Government" conference held in coordination with the Dutch Presidency of the European Union in The Hague concluded successfully yesterday. Keynote speakers on behalf of the Dutch prime minister and the office of the Irish prime minister urged governments to consider open source software in spirit of inter-agency collaboration. The European Commission launched its definition of Open Standards, and several representatives of EU ministries announced major national open source and free software efforts.

Linux vendors have rejected Microsoft's claim that commercial pressures mean they will struggle to cooperate. ZDNet UK comments that this is a change in Microsoft policy. Until now Linux has been bad because it's non-commercial, almost un-American in its cooperative nature. Now we see that competition is bad, because it encourages people to differentiate products.

It's official. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has posted on its web site its final decision, namely to use only formats that conform to the Open Document format for office productivity applications, a format Microsoft so far does not support, although they are certainly free to do so.
