Brazilian govt considers move to open source

Brazil's federal government is set to adopt open source software on a large scale in order to slash its IT expenditure and reduce its dependence on Microsoft.

Adopting open-source software will save the Brazilian central government hundreds of millions of dollars in annual licence fees paid for commercial licences. In 2001 the Brazilian government paid US$1.1 billion in licence fees.
