MIT OpenCourseWare is a large-scale, Web-based electronic publishing initiative with 1,100 courses published as of June 1, 2005. It provides free, searchable, access to MIT's course materials for educators, students, and self-learners around the world.

In Japan, in cooperation with MIT, six universities Osaka, Kyoto, Keiko, University of Tokyo,Waseda and the Tokyo Institute of Technology have established the JAPAN OCW ALLIANCE and are now offering the content of their academic courses to the general public.

More than one million people from 157 countries are tapping into over 2,500 modules and almost 100 courses developed by a worldwide community of authors in fields ranging from computer science to music and from mathematics to biodiversity. Modules and courses are also being translated into several languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Thai, and Japanese
