Red Hat pushes wider use of open-source computing in Philippines
One of the world’s largest providers of Linux software on Monday said the Philippines has great potential for developing open-source computing because Filipinos have a thorough understanding of its value: that Linux is more cost-effective, scalable, and has more robust architecture than proprietary software like Microsoft Windows.
Although proprietary systems such as Microsoft software still dominate the local market, Red Hat vice president for Asia-Pacific Steve McWhirter believes Linux and open source would eventually expand as more Filipinos become aware of its power and cost.
“You’ll see a lot adoption in the Philippines, especially in the server segment,” McWhirter said. “The Philippines is pretty well open for an open-source computing
environment. Being IT-savvy, Filipinos understand the picture very well.”
