NGOs to receive free open source tech training
A LOCAL foundation will be offering free training and workshop on open source technology to non-government organizations to push open source technology as “a political and practical alternative to proprietary software among NGO and development workers.”
Apart from introducing participants to the Linux operating system, the training will also orient NGOs on the political and social concerns related to free and open source software, focusing on its beginnings and current state of development, the Foundation for Media Alternatives said.
“Aside from the unquestioned technical advantages of open source technology, it is also fast becoming a political imperative for NGO workers, development activists, social movements and even policymakers especially in countries of the so-called Global South. As a technical and political option, there is a need for more learning sessions to popularize open source technology, particularly for users within the broad development community in the Philippines, said Alan Alegre, executive director of FMA.
