Linux Live CD Research
The current results in the research and testing of Linux live CDs and virtualization software at the Management Information Services Division (MISD) of the Office of the Vice President (OVP) of the Republic of the Philippines.
Now is a very exciting time for OVP MISD made possible by the linux
live CDs we had tested like Kanotix, Mandriva, Fedora, Freespire,
Puppy, Ubuntu, PC Linux, Sabayon, etc. However, MCNLive is our current
live CD favorite because of its size and its Virtual Box virtualization
software which enabled us to virtualize our existing XP desktop and use
our legacy application which would not run under the WINE windows
application emulator. We are also currently testing Fedora, Slax,
Puppy, Karoshi, Mandriva and PC Linux OS 2007. We have been very busy
conducting research, downloading ISOs to make thorough ereview and
testing of the various linux live CDs that we can use to kickstart our
linux migration this coming September 2007. We are very excited because
our success with the migration would mean that we will be the first
government agency besides the Department of Science and Technology
(DOST) who will be implementing and showcasing the usability of Free /
Open Source Software (FOSS). Through these we are doing our country and
our people great service by bringing the strategic, economic and social
benefits of using FOSS. These benefits are stated in the IOSN FOSS
ePrimer for Government as follows; developing local capacity /
industry, reducing imports / conserving foreign exchange, enhancing
national security, reducing copyright infringements and enabling
localization for its strategic benefits. For the economic benefits FOSS
usage would mean increase in competition, reduction in the Total Cost
of Ownership (TCO), enhancing security and achieving vendor
independence, while increasing access to information and the provision
of additional employment for the people give us its social benefits.
Successful implementation of this project would cause a domino effect
on FOSS usage and savings amounting to billions of dollars, significant
enough, for us Filipinos, and one of the developing countries, to fund
and provide for our people's basic needs and services. This will play a
great role for us to achieve the Millennieum Development Goals (MDGs)
and finally bring our less fortunate brothers and sisters a closer to
feeling, and living, a successful, and meaningful life... Finally we
are going to bring down the big stumbling blocks and shackles of
misinformation, the spread of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) that
blind and confuse us, and bind our people to poverty. Finally we are
bringing the mammoth greed that feeds and grows at the expense of
people's suffering. Finally because of FOSS we are free, and we will
continue to fight and bring God's cause of bringing faith, hope and
love to our people and empower them for the attainment of true
progress, and finally the bridging of the "digital divide"...
