Description: Free/Open Source software seem to defy conventional business models; and precisely because of this, a number of SMEs are reluctant to integrate them in the company workflow. In this session we aim to discuss the arguments that can be made for FOSS in the workplace and how FOSS can actually serve the strategies of the organization.

Description: One of the most widely used FOSS products are content management systems (CMS). In this session, the group will be updated on the development process of CMSs and what promotional strategies can make them succeed.

Description: The ASEAN region is a multi-lingual region. Another strength of FOSS is the ability of multiple stakeholders to participate in the localization of FOSS products. In the true spirit of sharing, practitioners of localization demonstrate how current tools and methods allow them to make software more relevant and understandable to their respective citizens.

Description: Voice-over-IP services is revolutionizing business by lowering total cost of ownership and extending the scope of the market for many SMEs. This session tackles the basics of VOIP for SMEs and then demonstrates the many applications in business.

10:15 - 12:00 pm SMS programming

Facilitator: Fernando D. Contreras, Rafael R. Sevilla

Description: The Philippines is the texting capital of the world with an alleged one billion short messages (SMS) flowing through its cellular network everyday. The rest of the world are likewise following suit. This session will introduce the tools for SMS programming, demonstrate how it works, and show SMS can enhance one's business or even be one's own business.

Session 4: IT Security for SMEs and Power Tools

1:15 - 3:00 pm IT Security for SMEs

Facilitator: Rudy Quimbo

Description: As ICT infrastructure and ramp-up costs go down, more SMEs will be automating their operations. With the many benefits of ICT are the co-occuring risks especially with business security. This session delves into the issues of security that come with integrating ICT into your business operations.

3:15 - 5:00 pm Virtual Private Networks with Open Source WiFi Routers

Facilitator: Horacio T. Cadiz, Philippine Network Foundation,Inc.

Description: Rather than leasing expensive dedicated point-to-point links to connect the branch office(s) to the main office, SMEs have discovered that subscribing each office to a DSL service is a more cost-effective solution.  With this configuration, the SMEs use the public Internet to route their inter-office communications. Unfortunately, this configuration exposes the inter-office communications to the risk of malicious attacks from the public Internet. The speaker will describe and demonstrate how to build a virtual private network (VPN) to secure the inter-office communications.  In addition, the speaker will use the common, inexpensive, and off-the-shelf wireless broadband routers running Linux and packaged with other Free Open Source Software as the VPN appliances for the offices.

1:15 - 3:00 Web development using Ajax, LAMP, and Eclipse

Description: There are numerous tools for developing code in the proprietary environment. Unknown to many, the FOSS arena has even more tools and resources for such activities. These two sessions demonstrate the power of FOSS in creating applications using different tools that do not break the company's budget.

8:15 - 10:00 am Developing Multimedia with FOSS & Developing LiveCDs for Marketing your FOSS products

Facilitator: Dominique Cimafranca, Villageidiotsavant

Description: SLAX is a small, fast, and flexible distribution that lets you run Linux completely from CD-ROM or USB pen drive without installation to hard drive. As such it is ideal for distributing small Linux software applications: companies could use SLAX to send out demo packages to customers; teachers could use it to give out educational software to students. This session introduces SLAX and gives the steps to customize the look of the distribution as well as to load it with customized applications.

Session 6: Obtaining further training and certification in FOSS


Description: The use of FOSS requires having a corps of experts who can support it. There are numerous training and certification programs available locally and internationally. This session show some that are available which may be accessed by SMEs.

Session 7: Moving forward and networking


Description: IOSN and INWent Capacity Building of Germany hopes to galvanize the successes and achievements of the conference by consolidating the stakeholders and nurturing them even beyond the conference. In this session, participants discuss how they wish to move forward and continue the collaboration that has been started.
