SUMMARY:RMS Seminar on Software Freedom and Dangers of Software Patents
DESCRIPTION:Richard Stallman will speak about the goals and philosophy
of the Free Software Movement\, and the status and history the GNU op
erating system\, which in combination with the kernel Linux is now use
d by tens of millions of users world-wide. Richard Stallman will also
explain how software patents obstruct software development. Software p
atents are patents that cover software ideas. They restrict the develo
pment of software\, so that every design decision brings a risk of get
ting sued. Patents in other fields restrict factories\, but software p
atents restrict every computer user. Economic research shows that they
  even retard progress.
