THE Information Communication Technology (ICT) branch of the Science, Technology and Environment Agency has recently introduced the concept of Open Source software to government and IT industry officials.
An Open Source evangelist and one-time Lao software enthusiast, Mr Anousak Souphavanh, said This is the first workshop of its kind that gears toward promoting freedom of choice to develop local software; Lao development officials did not previously have this choice, which
will enable them to save money from software licensing. He also mentioned that the benefits of Open Source are tremendous for the whole IT sector, especially in governance and education. At this point we have developed a Lao Office suite of a similar format to Microsoft which can be used with all platforms. This is very important for Laos because Open Source has been created
by us to help develop the country, the software is in Lao language and immensely useful to locals, who have so far been unable to learn software programmes because of the language barrier, he said. Most participants in the workshop were country developers,
especially government officials working in IT, who were introduced to how the software works, as well as the history and benefits of Open Source.
