Open source software eyed for use in more Philippine health centers
More Philippine local government units are now installing locally developed, open source software for health centers. The Community Health Information Tracking System or CHITS has been deployed in at least 12 municipalities, according to Dr. Alvin Marcelo, project manager of CHITS." CHITS is an information system for rural health units developed by Dr. Herman Tolentino and his team at the University of the Philippines Manila. Available Linux Applications or Linux (FOSS) Equivalent Alternatives to MS Windows Software
Most of the time friends and students asked about what free and open source software apps in Linux are available for their particular needs. Or questions like: “I use this software in MS Windows, if I migrate to Linux is there something similar I could use?” Before, as a response, I usually do a search of the Internet to look for FOSS apps, show it to them and then forget about it until another same question would crop up. A few months ago I started bookmarking some useful sites I can point to those interested (so I will also have something to refer back to once I forget those urls, which happens most of the time :-) ). And Yes! Everything you can do in MS Windows you can do in Linux or other FOSS flavors.
Making Wireless PC Cards work in Linux and Connect to the Internet via GPRS/EDGE
Wireless pc cards kit provided by 3G/GPRS/EDGE internet connection service providers are bundled only with install applications for MS Windows. Users now need not use their wireless pc cards in MS Windows only. There are some sites now that provide instructions on how to make their pc cards work on the Linux OS.

Organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) - Science, Technology and Environment Agency (STEA) and supported by the International Open Source Network (IOSN) ASEAN+3 Sub-Regional Node, the Lao PDR Linux Desktop Training of Trainers was held at the DoST-STEA E-Government Building, Vientiane Capital from July 2 to July 6, 2007.
