DabaweGNU's LiSA 1.2 Draws Mindanao Systems Administrators

by Holden Hao last modified 2008-05-07 06:00 PM

DabaweGNU, Inc.'s successful undertaking of the first Linux Systems Administration (LiSA1) training last February, encouraged the organization to conduct another training last April 7-11, 2008. Dubbed, LiSA 1.2, the training attracted systems administrators from all over Mindanao. In all, there were 22 participants. They represented various industries but many came from the government, education, and telecom sector. The biggest groups were from the city government of Surigao, University of Southern Mindanao, and Philcom.

Trainor Holden Hao walks the participants through partitioning with Raid and LVM.

From the groups who attended, the University of Southern Mindanao has been consistent in sending their systems administrators for training. Apparently, a mandate to use Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) was handed out by the school administrators after one of their top executives attended the 1st OpenHubs conferece sponsored by the ASEAN+3 Node of the International Open Source Network (IOSN ASEAN+3) and InWEnt Capacity Building International of Germany last November 2007. Since then they have been actively preparing for the eventual migration of their computer systems to FOSS and attending the training was part of their planned activities for such purpose.

The training followed the same outline as LiSA 1 but this time more emphasis was made on explaining concepts used in Linux and behind network services such as DNS, DHCP, mail, file sharing, and others. However, basic hands-on exercises were still a huge part of the training. In LiSA 1.2, more group work exercises were given which made the training more interesting and fun.

Another training, LiSA 1.3 is already being planned and its schedule will be announced soon. After LiSA 1.3, DabaweGNU plans to sponsor an LPI exam in Davao for LiSA participants and senior Linux administrators. Inspired by the success of LiSA, DabaweGNU is also preparing for other training courses. Preparations are being done for trainings on Web Development, Graphics with the GIMP, Blender, and OpenOffice.

About LiSA

The LiSA training is DabaweGNU's re-entry activity after two of its members, Holden Hao and Charles Pino, were sponsored by the UNDP-IOSN ASEAN+3 and InWEnt in its LPIC-2 Training of Trainers (ToT) activity held at UP Diliman last November 2007.
