A GNU/Linux operating system training for the ICT staff of the City Government of Surigao and the ICT faculty members of the Surigao State College of Technology. Participants will be introduced to the Linux desktops and office applications. This training also serves as a FOSS primer for the employees of the local government unit and faculties of the academic institution. The training also includes a crash course on networking concepts and best practices using FOSS technologies.
In Surigao City, Philippines, FOSS is still a new name not familiar to IT professionals of the local government unit and academic institutions. The lack of FOSS manpower pushes the City Government and academic institutions to use proprietary systems in office use and even in teaching computer methodologies. Even more, because of the high cost of ownership of proprietary software, software piracy is rampant in the city.
As the Management Information Team (MIT) of the City Government plans to migrate business applications to FOSS, it facilitated a training on Linux desktop in partnership with the Research and Development Extension Program of the Surigao State College of Technology (SSCT). The participants on the training will be the staff members of MIT and the staff members of the ICT department of SSCT.
This three-day training also includes networking concepts and best practices using FOSS technologies.
