DAVAO CITY - DabaweGNU Inc., a non-stock,non-profit organization promoting Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in this city and in the rest of Mindanao, successfully concluded its first major activity for 2008. Last February 4-8, it held its first Linux System Administration 1 or LiSA 1 training at the PhilNITS computer laboratory located at the DTI Regional Office in Davao City.
DabaweGNU president Holden Hao in the Linux System Administration 1 (LiSA1) training in Davao City. The LiSA1 training is the group's re-entry activity after the LPIC-2 Training of Trainers organized by IOSN ASEAN+3 and InWEnt, Germany last Nov. 2007.
Twenty-four (24) participants from various parts of the Philippines - Manila, Laguna, Iloilo, Cebu, Davao, General Santos, Marbel, Tacurong, and Cotabato attended the 5-day hands-on training. Some of the trainees were delegates from the 1st OpenHubs Conference organized by the UNDP-IOSN ASEAN+3 and InWEnt Capacity Building International, Germany with the Mindanao State University-General Santos City held last 22-27 November 2007 in Alabel, Sarangani Province.
The training was conducted by Mr. Holden Hao, a Linux Professional Institute (LPI) Level 1-certified Linux systems administrator and DabaweGNU's current president. He was assisted by DabaweGNU trustee, Nathaniel Jayme.
At the training, each participant had access to a computer to do hands-on exercises and were introduced to many technical concepts used in Linux systems administration. Various networking services such as web, mail, DNS, DHCP, proxy, and others were discussed. They were also exposed to working using command line tools and graphical interfaces. Certificates of participation were given to the trainees at the end of the activity.
DabaweGNU aims to make LiSA 1 one of its regular projects. Another LiSA 1 training is being planned towards the end of March 2008. After several LiSAs, DabaweGNU plans to organize an LPI certification exam in Davao City for its LiSA participants.
The LiSA 1 training is DabaweGNU's re-entry activity after two of its members, Holden Hao and Charles Pino, were sponsored by the UNDP-IOSN ASEAN+3 and InWEnt in its LPIC-2 Training of Trainers (ToT) activity held at UP Diliman last November 2007.
Also recently, DabaweGNU has entered into an agreement with the UNDP-IOSN ASEAN+3 to jointly develop an open source electronic health record (EHR) software.
DabaweGNU, Inc. began from an Internet mailing list that was established after a series of successful seminars, which featured one of the most well-known FOSS projects: the GNU/Linux operating system. The organization came about from the list members' common desire to have a venue to further enhance knowledge and experiment on FOSS technologies.
