The International Open Source Network (IOSN) ASEAN+3 and InWEnt Capacity Building International, Germany in collaboration with the The State Ministry for Research and Technology (RISTEK), Republic of Indonesia are inviting both government and non-government organizations (NGOs), IT small-to-medium enterprises/businesses (SMEs/SMBs), developers, experts, trainers and users of Free/Open Source Software (F/OSS) disaster management information systems to a Training of Trainers (ToT) for FOSS Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with Sahana.
The training will be held at the PDII-LIPI in Jakarta, Indonesia from March 24 to 28, 2008.
This activity is in response to the great demand and interest for a follow-up training as a result of the successful conduct of an earlier ToT on FOSS GIS for Disaster Management held last October 2007 in PDII-LIPI in Jakarta, Indonesia.
DAVAO CITY - DabaweGNU Inc., a non-stock,non-profit organization promoting Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in this city and in the rest of Mindanao, successfully concluded its first major activity for 2008. Last February 4-8, it held its first Linux System Administration 1 or LiSA 1 training at the PhilNITS computer laboratory located at the DTI Regional Office in Davao City.
The ASEAN+3 Node of the International Open Source Network (IOSN) together with the University of the Philippines Manila-National Telehealth Center in cooperation with the Diliman Interactive Learning Center are holding examinations for LPIC-1 (101 and 102) and LPIC-2 (201 and 202).
The examinations are open to all interested individuals living in the Philippines and those coming from other countries. However, the organizers are not obliged to shoulder accommodations and transportation expenses that the examinees will incur during the scheduled examinations.
KABACAN, NORTH COTABATO, PHILIPPINES. In an official letter from Dr. Virgilio G. Oliva, University of Southern Mindanao (USM) president, to the International Open Source Network (IOSN) ASEAN+3, it was formally announced that USM-Kabacan will spearhead the migration of its computer systems from proprietary to free/open source software (F/OSS) at the first quarter of 2008 through its Information and Communications Technology Center (USM-ICTC) as part of its continuing F/OSS advocacy in line with the IOSN ASEAN+3 agenda.
SARANGANI PROVINCE, SOUTH-CENTRAL MINDANAO. In its goal to tap and develop Philippine state universities and colleges (SUCs) to be accessible resource centers for free/open source software (F/OSS), the ASEAN+3 Node of the International Open Source Network (IOSN ASEAN+3) and InWEnt Capacity Building International, Germany jointly supported the holding of the 1st OpenHUBS Conference last 27-29 November 2007 at the Isla Parilla Resort, Municipality of Alabel, in Sarangani Province. The 3-day event was organized by the Mindanao State University (MSU)-GenSan Computer Center with the SoCSKSarGen Open Source Society (SOSS) and the Koronadal National Comprehensive High School (KNCHS) FOSS Society.
Hanoi 18 April 2008: A high-level workshop is discussing key issues around Free and Open Source Software such as business models, regulations and requirements to access the European marketplace in Hanoi, Vietnam. The event is organised by the initiative “FOSS-Bridge EU-Vietnam” through InWEnt - Capacity Building International of Germany, INRIA of France and IOIT of Vietnam. The four day event gathers over 30 representatives from key Vietnamese ICT associations and companies, who all share an interest in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). In group works and through direct interactions with experienced FOSS experts from Europe and Vietnam, they exchange knowledge on international regulations and how to build better capacity in FOSS business models and applications, which meet the needs of the market in Vietnam and internationally. Through two additional 6-days workshops in July and November 2008 the participants are supported in becoming multipliers and trainers of FOSS expertise in Vietnam.
Boosting Cooperation through Free and Open Source Software FOSS
The main goal of FOSS Bridge "EU-Vietnam" - Joint Business through Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)" is to strengthen Southeast Asian software industries and to boost co-operation with Europe through innovative collaboration on FOSS and business development.
University of the Philippines computer science students have won an international award for a Java program that enables doctors in rural areas to access a database of common poisons using their mobile phones. Diana Bandojo, Ma. Jaymee Gatapia and Reggie Santos were named winners in the medical solutions category of the Duke’s Choice Award, an annual search for innovative programs running on the Java platform.
The Workshop on Open Source and Open Content (WOSOC) will be held from 30th of November till the 3rd of December 2008. The venue is Bali Dynasty Hotel, Denpasar - Bali, Indonesia.
The theme for the WOSOC is “Making the Open Source and Open Content work for people”. It is expected to attract international and region participants and will bring together participants representative of government, businesses, civil society organizations and academics.
