MOSS: 1st Hands-On Power Training
Mindanao Open Source Society(MOSS) conducted its 1st hands on power training at Ateneo de Zamboanga Open Laboratory.The 2 days hands on training was intended to promote Open Source awareness to newly recruited MOSS members as well as Zamboanguenos of what Open Source is, its usage and its many benefits.
February 09, 2007 Friday, marked the start of the 2 day long 1st Hands-On Power Training organized by the Open Source Advocates of Mindanao Open Source Society (MOSS). The training who is spearheaded by Rj Ian Sevilla and several others successfully recruited approximately Fifteen (15) IT inclined students as well as professional to take part and contribute to MOSS.
Most of the participants where prominent Microsoft users to which learning open source was a newer challenge for them. Hence, the first day of training for the participants turned out a knowledge add on setting on learning how to install linux as well as using it.
The two (2) days training was a learning by doing morning and afternoon session that started at 8:00 in the morning to 5:00 afternoon with a noon and snack break. Different topics were discussed by different lecturers who in one way or the other have contributed their time knowledge as well as their expertise on the topics like: FOSS, Linux Installation,LAMP,Shell Scripting, Networking, Content Management System (using Joomla), and some use of Open Source Software tools like Gimp.
Indeed at the second day Feb. 10,2007,having conducted the 2 days training helped the participants address their doubts and worries as of their first impression that using open source is difficult, to which their impression illustrated the other way around with seeing how it was done and by doing it themselves the participants have learned to appreciate installing linux/open source as well as using it.
